Abscess

Abscess

An abscess is a collection of pus that has built up within the tissue of the body. Pus may be a thick fluid that sometimes contains white blood cells, dead tissue, and bacteria. As well as pus could be yellow or green and have a nasty smell.

Signs and symptoms of abscesses include redness, pain, warmth, and swelling. When the pus swelling is pressed it feels fluid-filled in it. The redness area could be extended beyond the swelling.
Abscesses can develop at various parts of your body. The most common sites on the skin include your armpits (axillae), areas around your anus and vagina (Bartholin gland abscess), rock bottom of your spine (pilonidal abscess), around a tooth (dental abscess), and in your groin. Inflammation around a follicle also can cause the formation of an abscess, which is named a boil (furuncle). A severe or large cluster of boils is named carbuncle.
Abscesses are usually caused by a bacterial infection. Usually when our normal skin barrier is damaged or broken, even from minor trauma, bacteria can enter the skin. In various countries such as the US, they’re usually caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. Whereas some abscesses are often caused by parasites, but these are more common within the developing world.

A major risk factor for developing skin abscesses is a weak immune system (either from chronic diseases or from medications) because the body’s ability to fight infection is decreased. Other risk factors include exposure to dirty environments or people with infections, poor personal hygiene, and poor circulation

Home Remedies

Apply Tea Tree Oil
  • Tea tree oil is an efficient antibacterial and antifungal which helps in treating an abscess.
  • Apply tea tree oil to the abscess symptoms.
  • Tea tree oil may cause skin irritation, swelling, burning, and redness for a couple of people.
  • Don’t take tea tree oil orally.
Apply turmeric paste

According to researchers, Turmeric has antibacterial and antiseptic properties, which helps heal abscess.

You can use turmeric as a paste.

  • Add a few drops of castor oil to a teaspoon of turmeric to form a thick paste and apply it over the abscesses to cover them completely.
  • Let the paste dry and then wash it off with lukewarm water.
Apply crushed garlic

Garlic has antibacterial properties which helps heal abscess.

Apply crushed garlic to the abscess as a poultice.

Apply heat

Moist heat (such as warm compresses) helps the abscess drain so it heals faster.

Soak a clean washcloth in hot water. Hold the compress to the affected area for 10 to 15 minutes. Do this three to four times daily until the boil or stye releases pus and heals. Be careful not to use water that is too hot, especially on children.

Apply raw onion

Onions contain antiseptic chemicals which can act as an effective antimicrobial irritant.

Take a thick slice of onion and place it directly on the abscess. Wrap the onion with a cloth so that the heat of the onion reaches inside the skin.

Apply Epsom salt compress

Epsom salt acts as a drying agent that brings the boil to a head and draws out the toxins.

Soak a washcloth with 2 tablespoons of Epsom salt in a cup of hot water. Cover the area completely with the compress for 15 minutes.

Apply raw potato

The alkaline nature of potato juice cleans the infected area while the acidic property of the pulp helps slough off dead cells and infected material.

Grate a raw potato finely to produce a soft, pliable, mush. Spread it onto a clean cloth, apply it to the affected area, and leave it overnight.

Take turmeric

Turmeric is antibacterial and antiseptic, which has blood purifying effects on the body. Taking turmeric internally can help dissolve and heal boils.

Take one teaspoon of turmeric powder in warm water three times a day.

Turmeric usually does not cause significant side effects; however, some people can experience stomach upset, nausea, dizziness, or diarrhea.

Turmeric can make gallbladder problems worse. Do not use turmeric if you have gallstones or a bile duct obstruction.

Turmeric can cause stomach upset in some people. It might make stomach problems such as GERD worse. Do not take turmeric if it worsens symptoms of GERD.

Taking turmeric might slow blood clotting. This might increase the risk of bruising and bleeding in people with bleeding disorders. It might cause extra bleeding during and after surgery. Stop using turmeric at least 2 weeks before a scheduled surgery.

Turmeric contains a chemical called curcumin, which might decrease blood sugar in people with diabetes. Use with caution in people with diabetes as it might make blood sugar too low.

Curcumin also acts like the hormone estrogen, which in theory can make hormone-sensitive conditions worse. However, some research shows that turmeric actually reduces the effects of estrogen in some hormone-sensitive cancer cells, which means turmeric might have beneficial effects on hormone-sensitive conditions. Until more is known, use cautiously if you have a condition that might be made worse by exposure to hormones.

Turmeric might lower testosterone levels and decrease sperm movement when taken by mouth by men. This might reduce fertility. Turmeric should be used cautiously by people trying to have a baby.

Taking high amounts of turmeric might prevent the absorption of iron. Turmeric should be used with caution in people with iron deficiency.

Apply neem (Indian lilac) paste

Neem leaves contain quercetin which reduces inflammation and redness caused by abscess and keeps the skin cool and soothed.

Grind a handful of neem leaves or boil neem leaves in water and apply the paste or juice to the boil.

Take black seed (Nigella Sativa) oil

Black seed has been used extensively as a herbal remedy for many conditions for thousands of years.

Mix half a teaspoon of black seed oil into a hot or cold drink, and take this twice daily.

Black seed might lower blood sugar levels in some people. Watch for signs of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and monitor your blood sugar carefully if you have diabetes and use black seed.

Black seed might lower blood pressure. In theory, taking black seed might make blood pressure become too low in people with low blood pressure.

Black seed might slow blood clotting, reduce blood sugar, and increase sleepiness in some people. In theory, black seed might increase the risk for bleeding and interfere with blood sugar control and anesthesia during and after surgical procedures. Stop using black seed at least two weeks before a scheduled surgery.

Apply bread poultice

Covering the abscess with poultice will pull out the pus and infection (draw the pus toward the surface of the skin.)

Soak a piece of bread in warm milk or water and put it on to the abscess for a few minutes.

Apply cornmeal

Cornmeal is a natural absorbent to help treat boils.

Mix water with cornmeal to make a thick paste and apply to the abscess.

Apply calendula solution

Calendula is anti-inflammatory which heals wounds.

Steep calendula flowers in hot water for half-hour. Soak a clean cloth in this solution and apply it to the affected area.

Take goldenseal supplement

Goldenseal has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and immune-enhancing properties.

Standard dosage recommendations for goldenseal have not been established. Typical dosage ranges from 250 mg to 1,000 mg, taken three times daily. Goldenseal may interact with some medications and existing health conditions. Do not take goldenseal supplements if you’re pregnant because they may cause uterine contractions.

Do not use goldenseal during pregnancy or breast-feeding.

It may be unsafe for small children to take goldenseal.

Take Vitamin C supplement

Vitamin C boosts the immune system which prevents abscesses, and it also reduces skin inflammation. In addition, vitamin C helps the body make collagen to form new tissue.

Take vitamin C supplements or consume foods rich in vitamin C, such as red pepper, orange, grapefruit, kiwi, etc.

Apply milk

Milk helps relieve the pain from the abscess.

Apply milk to the abscess.

Take Zinc supplement

Zinc enhances skin function and the immune system. It kills bacteria and the antioxidant reduces inflammation. Zinc also helps wounds heal.

The amount of zinc you should take depends on your age and other conditions. The daily recommended amount ranges from 2 mg to 13 mg.

Take burdock root supplement

Burdock root is a great skin detoxifier.

Standard dosage recommendations for burdock root have not been established. Classical dosage is 2,000 mg. Avoid using burdock root if you are pregnant.

Burdock might slow blood clotting. Use caution if you have bleeding related conditions. Stop taking it at least two weeks before a scheduled surgery.

Burdock may cause an allergic reaction in people who are sensitive to the Asteraceae/Compositae family of plants (e.g., ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds, and daisies).

Burdock might lower blood sugar levels. Use caution if you have blood sugar related conditions.
